Questacon in Canberra, Australia has used QR codes in one exhibition.
Each exhibit within the exhibition has its own QR code, which links to
further (text-based) information, rather than any kind of interactive
extension. We tracked one to three QR-code visits each day when the
exhibition first opened, but I haven't been informed of the current
tracking stats.

In Australia, mobile phone options have been slow to take off, as phone
users are charged to make rather than receive a call (which I believe is
different in other countries).

The Powerhouse Museum in Sydney has been using QR codes for a long
time--search for Seb Chan's blog. Other institutions, particularly in
Melbourne have been using RFID to track visitors' exhibit interests and
usage too, but I don't have any further information on those, other than
to recommend that you find the paper 'Location-aware services' which was
presented at the 2009 Museums and the Web conference on Saturday 18
April, 2009.

Subject: Does your science center use bar codes, QR codes, RFID,

Hi,
I am working on a project that will look at current practices around the
use of bar codes, RFID, mobile, augmented reality etc. in the context of
science centers, and to develop some new models and ideas.

Does your museum use or want to use any of these things in interactives
or to connect visitors to exhibits or online?

I'd like to connect with few individuals interested to participate to
document some current systems and comment on what an ideal system would
look like to you.
The project is also lining up designers and consultants to propose
models and methods, so it should get some pretty interesting results.

Please let me know directly at [log in to unmask] Thanks!
Bob Ketner
