Hi Joan,

Probably the best site for images and animations freely available for
nonprofit educational use is ViperLib, the Visual Perception Library. The
original site is http://viperlib.york.ac.uk, and the [still buggy] Beta
version of their new and improved site is at http://viperlibnew.york.ac.uk/ .
ViperLib is run by Peter Thompson and Rob Stone, who do a great job
promoting open access to vision research materials. (Peter is probably best
known to science museum folks as the creator of the "Thacher Illusion", an
upside-down face with inverted features which looks grotesque when rotated
180 degrees. The Exploratorium's version uses Vanna White instead of
Thacher.)

Three other excellent sites for visual illusions, also run by scientists,
but with some restrictions on use, are:
Michael Bach's Optische Täuschung http://www.michaelbach.de/ot/
Ken Brecher's Project Lite http://lite.bu.edu/
Akiyoshi's Illusion Pages http://www.ritsumei.ac.jp/~akitaoka/index-e.html

Beware - many illusions found online are very sloppy about the science (e.g.
that viral rotating silhouette illusion, which was usually accompanied by
pseudoscientific gibberish about "right brained" and "left brained"
people.) Illusions are scientific tools, used in current vision research,
and it's important to get the science right.

-Richard
