I wonder if this could be Gustav Mayer, a confectioner who worked in Manhattan and later Staten Island. He is most famous for inventing the sugar wafer, later made popular by Nabisco.
Best,
Tim

Subject: German fruit jar? lid
Does anyone know of any references for German canned fruit jar(?) lids? I have one, from a likely mid-19th century context. The only words I've been able to make out so far are "canned fruit" (in German) and a name (Gustave Mayuer or Maguer).
Sincerely,
Christa
