In response to Pat Tucker's inquiry about a coin:
 
I would suggest you look at Spanish and French coins.  I do not have a
royal succession for France and Spain handy but CAR? US  III could easily
by Carolus (Charles) III and  ??????IA could be FRANCIA OR
ESPANIA.  Spanish coins, at least were quite widespread throughout the
New World, even in English colonies
