Since you seem to be able to tolerate a few compromises in sound quality
for the sake of the performance, you might give a listen to the Furtwangler
version that is not (at least I think not) on the EMI label but is
periodically available on some others...  I think it is 1952 or 1953...
there are at least three Furtwangler versions but this is the best...  I
will try to confirm the date.  I have it on LP but hear it is available on
CD now...  then of course the Klemperer on EMI is my favorite because of
the cast...  which you must already have...  give it a listen...  I also
like the Davis, Bernstein, and Solti versions...  since you seem to have
heard all these without getting caught up in it, maybe we have finally
found a piece of music that is Satz-proof.
