I also want to say thanks to Mimi for pointing to that fabulous article.
Rosen does it every time for me! His book The Romantic Generation had
a huge impact on my thinking as regards all art, not just music; but
specifically, the section on Schumann was the big breakthrough in my
understanding not to mention enjoyment of Sch's music (listening to Arrau
do the Humoresque as I type). And this article again was full of new gems
and bits to chew. Now-- does anyone know if there is a spot online where
one might access the text of Rosen's article "Where Ravel ends and Debussy
Begins" (from Cahiers Debussy no. 6, Geneva, 1983)? Just curious-- it's
mentioned in the bibliography of one of my Debussy books and sounds ver
enticing.
