It is very likely that the bassoonist is practicing a technique called
"circular breathing" in which he stores air in his cheeks and exhales it
while he is simultaneously inhaling through his nose.  The opening of the
Strauss oboe concerto is often played this way.  "in one breath" as it
were.  It is something that many wind players can do, but it baffles me
completely!
