Deryk Barker writes about Liszt's generous support of other composers:
>And for no reward either. It's interesting to compare the attitiude
>to Liszt to Schumann, when S needed performances and Schumann to L when
>*he* did. Liszt was generosity itself. Schumann defined "ingrate".
Thus I find it incredibly ironic when Liszt is berated for being a shallow,
egocentric showman.
It has been the case for many years now that when I play the "what historic
personage would you like to have met in person" game I always choose Brahms
or Liszt.
