Dear Pat,
You might write to the California Dept. of Parks and Recreation, The
Archaeology Labortory, c/o Pete Schulz, 2505 Port St. West Sacramento,
(916) 445-9663 and ask him for a  copy of the Camillus Nelson report. This
report invenoried a ranching operation in Woodland CA. If I recall Camillus
Nelson brought in a new breed of cattle in the middle to late nineteenth
century. Apparently the family raised little of their own food, depending
on local markets.
