Bill: Some of these Railroad Camps had numbers of "Camp Followers"
who were anything from Gamblers, family, hookers, ect.  That did not
eat in mess halls.  Not all railorad line construction crews HAD mess
halls. Three starting references are:
1) Rossillion, Mary P. 1984, The Curecanti Archeological Project: The
Archeology of Marion, An Historic Railroad Camp in Curecanti National
Recreation Area, Colorado.
2) Buckles, William G., 1980, Models For Railroad Construction
Related Camps in the West. Manuscript, Dept of Anthropology,
University of Southern Colorado, Pueblo.
3) Vaughan, Trudy, 1985, Archaeological Investigations at Two
Historic Camps of the McCloud River Lumbar Comapny and the McCloud
River Railroad.  USDA Forest Service, Shasta-Trinity National
Forests, Redding, CA.
