In responce to the questions, yes Praire Grove was a Civil War
battlefield.  The battle lasted one day, and was technically a northern
victory.  Little historical documentation exists on the activities of the
battle, mainly some diaries, etc.
 
In cooperation with the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies and the
Department of Landscape architecture at the U of A we tried to located
some of the specific artillery batteries at the site, where they were
located, etc.  WE did this by metal detecting and shovel testing an area
that, according to a GIS reconstruction of the battlefield, should have
contained substantial numbers of artillery shells.  Unfortunelty we were
only minimally succesful.  I believe the problem was the model, as
constructed by CAST, failed to take into consideration relic hunting
after the battle by locals, and apparent mis-information in the diaries.
We are supposed to be funded for additonal work, however the monies have
yet to come through.
