This is in reply to Jack Stewart's message on the Prarie Grove Battlefield: I w
as primarily interested whether archaeological work done on battlefields tends
to support or to contradict the assertions made about who all was there and wha
t they did. That is, types of forces (calvary, infantry, artillery), in what st
rengths, and so. Also, where activivity before, during, and/or after the action
was concentrated, andto what intensities. Prarie Grove was a Civil War battle,r
ight? Those are of particular interest to me. I am trying to get a sense of how
archaeology relates to theinterpretation of bias, neglient absences, etc. in th
e written record. Do we see the battle in a qualitatively different light now?
Is substantively more now known? I hope that I am being specific enough? Since
I was looking for responses from a wide variety of sources, my queries are perh
aps a bit nebulous.
