Im not sure one has to search to deep for the use of sand under tiles
or brick pavers.   It's actually the easiest method of forming a
level bedding layer allowing for an even floor or courtyard.  Beyond
that it may have advantages for drainage, sterility, and thermal
expansion but I suspect these were more at the "subliminal level"
