Speaking of bells and whistles, my favorite example occurred on our site in
Tubac. A professor brought out his GPR (ground-penetrating radar) equipment
and crew to help us in our excavations. One area that he ran his equipment
over showed no anomalies or squiggles. We continued our excavation in that
area anyways and discovered a ten foot deep casamata (powderhouse) under the
guardhouse. It had been filled in at the top with adobe bricks, which
apparently fooled the radar.
