I likely have missed parts of this discussion, but unexplored ordnance is not uncommon
across the South. Cannon balls, mortar rounds are dangerous . You should contact the
State police or or the closest military base as ask for assistance. We have found stray rounds on surveys due to overshots from gunboats, lost rounds about camps, and
Advance/retreat routes. Survey on military bases should make sure that the areas are
Free from live rounds, even practice rounds can be dangerous. Trip lines for simulations can lead to injury as well. Careful articulation on base with environmental offices and the appropriate personnel should be maintained. Survey personel should be trained
by military about hazards.
Curated ordnance should be unloaded, not an easy task. Collectors are hurt when they try it! If the artifacts need curation , conservation experts need to do it.

If you are on or near a military base, they will have UXO personnel to dispose of things like ammunition (or any of the other interesting explodey things you may find on a base). Outside of that, you should contact your local police department. They will either have the personnel for disposal of UXO or they will be able to find the appropriate military techs for disposal.
