ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

I believe it is more a revolution than a fad. There were always museums with these types of spaces by whatever name and many who wanted to do them but were unsure or unwilling to make the commitment. There is certainly a buy-in required: dedicated staff, expendable materials, use of tools by visitors, etc.

So I think the concept has been around for a long time and maybe its time has just come. There are good fads and bad fads and I have no doubt that there will be a shake out and some will remain while other museums decide to opt out and return to old and easier ways.

I would love hear people's comments for and against as I want to include them in the presentation to ensure that it will be valuable for attendees. I of course, as many of you know, have passionate opinions about the topic, but uncharacteristically I will refrain from commenting. Please let me know what you think and more importantly links to examples of different ways science centers are implementing these programs.
