Piping is a big deal for this.
I think what I've noticed is that if it is in a kids area, there is going to be a way that something is going to get plugged, overflowed, algae covered, and everything else that comes with trying to pipe sanitary water.
As well as what has been brought up before:
Clay/play dough, sand, books/puzzles, stuffed animals, hair, coins, and everything else that isn't tied down is bound to get put into the water at some point.
Filtration is key and, as said before, things like sand and clay can wreak havoc on a system.

The idea is good, but trying to pull it off is doomed to get everything around the exhibit wet and everything that can move away from an exhibit is doomed to join into the water play area as well.

The reception I've seen is usually overall really great though. But yes, as it seems most others have stated, maintenance is a big part of it.
But if you really go over what could go wrong and are willing to put the time and effort into upkeep, it's a wonderful addition.

Cheers,

Hi,

At Science Alive we are busy designing our new science centre. We know water play areas for preschoolers are a massive hit with the public but have logistical challenges. I've spoken to a few designers recently who have said given their chance again they would not have a water play area. What say you? Would you do it again? What have you learnt?

Thanks,

Amy
