Becky,
I once came across this when searching for something else. It is in German,
but I can send a tiny url for an English translation. This looks like a
great solution:

Subject: Hospital co-sleepers
I know there has been discussion from time to time about co-sleepers or
sidecar arrangements for hospital beds. Has anyone found a manufacturer
who sells something like this in the U.S.? Or is there any hospital in
the U.S. that does anything to make co-sleeping safer on the postpartum
unit? Our meeting about "breastfeeding babies and rampant pacifier
use" came back around to babies in the nursery at night. Babies are
sent to the nursery because they wake up every time mom puts them back
in the crib, which she has been told to do, and she is getting no
sleep. If the babies could just be IN THE BED, everybody--including
the nurses--would be so much happier. Our entire unit will be rebuilt
in the next couple years and all the beds will be replaced so here's our
chance--but it doesn't seem like there's anything out there! Please let
me know if there is.
