David Rotenstein worked on tanneries for several years. I'm not sure  
where you can contact him today.  As he wrote to histarch in 1995:

I am in Washington, D.C. researching tanneries and the U.S. Leather
Company right now. I have an extensive bibliography on tanneries,
including archaeological, folklife, historical and technical sources. I
can post it to the list (it's kind of long, though) or put the file on

WWW home page for FTP retrieval.
