In talking with some of those involved in getting rid of bags at hospitals
here in Portland, I was surprised to learn that it was maternity ward nurses
who were most reluctant to stop giving them. This wasn't because they wanted
to "push formula" so much as they liked the tradtion of giving a "gift" (in
quotes because of course formula-filled bags are no gift for babies when
moms' efforts to breastfeed are undermined by them). Once that was
understood, it was agreed that hospitals could still give out bags, but
without samples, coupons, or other formula company swag.

Most hospitals give free formula, however it comes from a discharge nurse,
not the LC.

You wouldn't believe how many moms, when I ask why they are doing both (at
first ped vss) say because the nurse gave it to me, because they said my
baby was too big etc etc etc ad nauseum.
