Public Archaeologist - The Department of Anthropology at Florida
Atlantic University invites applications for two full-time staff
positions for the newly-created Southeast Region Public Archaeology
Center of the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) to begin Spring
2007.  The Center will operate from FAU's campus in Ft. Lauderdale.  For

We are seeking two Public Archaeologists, one with a specialization in
terrestrial archaeology and one in underwater archaeology.  One will
serve as the Director of the Southeast Region Public Archaeology Center.
Both will develop and deliver Public Archaeology services within this
region. Most important is a willingness to develop opportunities and
strategies for engaging diverse publics on archaeological issues.

 

The positions focus on southeast Florida and provide public outreach,
assistance to local governments, and assistance to the Florida Division
of Historical Resources in their archaeological responsibilities.  The
individual selected to serve as Director of the Southeast Region will be
responsible for supervision of Center staff and oversight of all
administrative and budgetary responsibilities of the Center.

 

Qualifications: Masters degree (Ph.D. preferred) in archaeology or
anthropology with a specialization in archaeology and two years of
appropriate experience.  Experience in the archaeology of the
southeastern U.S. is preferred, as is previous experience in supervision
of archaeological projects, heritage tourism, and education. Candidates
for the underwater archaeology position must have experience in
conducting archaeological research in an underwater environment and
possess diving certification.  Both candidates must demonstrate
excellent communication skills, organization, and computer knowledge and
be willing to engage in grant writing.  Experience in working with
volunteers is highly valued.  The successful candidates must be able to
impart archaeological, historical, and ecological information to lay
audiences.
