Merry Holidays! from Tropical South Florida where the skies are slightly
overcast and breezes are a balmy 78 degrees and the aroma of the roasting pigs are
filling the air as well as the Latina music. Quite Fiestive! But this
posting is to continue the thoughts that Pam Hirsch made on the American Baby's
article on What Breastfeeding Is Really Like. Pam is on the money, but this
generation is all about Me...and I think that its the parents of these young
parents that have initiated the attitude. I have spent alot of time reminding my
adult children "Its not all about YOU". Working in the hospital setting I see
the fathers who groan when we go into assess the Moms and Babes in the am..."I
didn't sleep all night"...Guess what Dad welcome to Parenthood...I remind
them I lost more sleep with my kids as teenagers than as breastfeeding
newborns...this why Mother Nature wakes you in last trimester to get you ready for
interrupted sleep patterns. Last week I had a cute little girl who was doing
fairly well until her Mother showed up and told her that she couldn't breastfeed
her daughter...the baby was tooooooo hungry! Grandma proceed to feed it 3 oz of
formula...I reminded Dad that its Mommy's baby and if she wants to breastfeed
its HER call...not Gram's, his or mine. I see women who are choosing
epidurals upon admission....elective cesareans and when one OB actually came out in
the newspaper that she had chosen not to breastfeed and had an elective section
to spare her vagina and breasts I almost threw up...(she will go to Gyn only
in the new year). Today I was speaking with several coworkers about the new
catch phrase of the concept of Normal Birth....its a sad commentary that we
have to address these things...So when my own pregnant daughter called to
complain she couldn't wrap presents becs her unborn daughter was causing her back to
hurt....I once again reminded her that she should celebrate this baby's
movement and she (who had IVF) should be reminded this what she waited so long to
enjoy and it was no longer all about Jennifer, but now her baby. I also
suggested her husband give her a back rub and help out wrapping . So tomorrow I will
work and hope that I can convey the best gift they will ever give their babies
will be the gift of being breastfed. So Pam thanks for the commentary
because What Breastfeeding Is REALLY Like is an INDIVIDUAL
Experience not just for each and every Mom, but with each and every baby.
Thanks and once again Happy Happy.
