Just want to add my perspective on deep suctioning of infants.....if
neonatologists add delivery they often deep suction...others wait and use the bulb if
needed...some babies will spit up their mucus and others have to pass them
down and out...and others are really mucousy but don't seem to know how to get it
out...then nursery nurses will often deep suction...you should have oxygen
near by because they can vagal down and may have more problelms...I have seen
the people who routinely do it and others who are patient and wait for colostrum
and nature to work together....it's often the cesarean birth babies who will
get suctioned quicker than vaginal deliveries...because going through the
birth canal helps to push fluids up and out...just in everything in life "nothing
should be routine"...look and see what the baby is showing you...some kids
need a hand and it might be a few hours later but give them a chance....and yes
they can get dusky or blue as they woof up that mucus...that is why every mom
needs to know how to use a bulb syringe. And once again most do feed better
after they get rid of the extra stuff...but deep suctioning routinely makes
throats "hurt" and babies may not feed well if the person who does it is
vigorous....Just a note of observation from an LDRP girl.
