Beth Anderson's "September Swale" To Be Performed at New Jersey's Rider
University

New York composer Beth Anderson's September Swale will be performed by
pianist Marvin Rosen on Saturday, May 31, 8 PM at Bristol Chapel of Rider
University's Westminster Choir College, 101 Walnut Lane in Princeton,
New Jersey.

Mr. Rosen will present September Swale along with accessible new music
from Azerbaijan, Greece, Estonia and other piano music written after
1970.

The work, written for piano solo, can also be performed by guitar with
mandolin or harpsichord solo or violin with piano, and was first performed
by harpsichordist Elaine Comparone in New York City. It has also been
performed at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio;
at Richmondtown Branch Library on Staten Island, New York and in San
Francisco by Joseph Kubera; and in Allentown, Pennsylvania by Elaine
Comparone. It has also been recorded by Antes/Bella Musica on Chili Con
Tango.

Tickets for the May 31 performance are $7 adults, $5 students/senior
citizens. For tickets call the Rider University box office at 609-921-2663.

Beth Anderson has written the following about her use of the title Swale
in so many of her works: "A swale is a meadow or a marsh where there is
nourishment and moisture and therefore, a rich diversity of plant life.
My work, since 1984, has been made from swatches (of newly composed
music, rather than found music) which are reminiscent of this diversity.
When a horse named Swale won the Kentucky Derby several years ago, I
discovered the word and have used it extensively: Pennyroyal Swale and
Rosemary Swale for string quartet, Brass Swale and Saturday/Sunday Swale
for brass quintet, Guitar Swale for guitar duet, May Swale for viola
solo, Minnesota Swale for orchestra, New Mexico Swale and August Swale
for chamber ensemble, Flute Swale for solo flute, Rhode Island Swale for
harpsichord, and Three Swales for string orchestra, the most recent."

She was the subject of Kyle Gann's American Composer feature in
2001 in Chamber Music Magazine. You can read the article online at
