sure, but we are new york, where people get up and put on their tuxes  
when they go to get the morning paper.  seriously, we are fairly  
formal in our social dress here in NY.  I agree that you might as well  
put black tie and those men who don't want to will just wear business  
suits or tuxes with "air ties"  Women have more leeway in how they  
dress for formal social things.
