From our AV department:
We were just looking at some new Panasonic projectors, and have just ordered two, that have a much longer lamp life than everyone else currently has. Also these new Panasonic projectors have self cleaning filters, a completely sealed optical block, and the best feature of all, a built in "mini UPS unit" that will keep the cooling fans running until the unit is completely cooled down in the event of a power failure.

And in a follow-up:
that's why we were interested in the new Panasonic with the internal circuits that keep the cooling system running after a loss of power. Also the self cleaning, self changing filter feature is handy since we are getting so overburdened with maintenance and new installations it is often difficult to get the routine maintenance done on time. With the new projectors they can be connected to the network and they will send us an email if they are getting close to running out of filter material on the roll or the lamp is getting near it's hour limit. Very handy feature when we're scattered on so many projects at the same time.

Another thing we've learned is that with projectors used in our applications it is best to stay away from LCD units. The DLP projectors, though more costly, are better suited to running the way we run them. Panasonic will only warrant an LCD projector for the life of the first set of lamps and will not offer an extended warranty. However on the DLP units we can get a 5 year warranty with guaranteed 24 hour delivery of a loaner in the event of a projector failure.

Another thing with LCD projectors is to religiously blow out the
filters, at least on a monthly basis if not more. Also make sure they
have plenty of ventilation and by all means make sure they go through a
proper power down cycle that allows the fans to cool the lamp properly.
In many projectors you can run the lamps at low power to preserve life.

One interesting thing we discovered was that many of our projectors were
connected to the exhibit hall lighting grid. When the lights were
turned off, the projectors immediately shut down, fans and all. We
virtually destroyed all the Panasonic projectors in our building in less
than a year. Be sure to have personnel do the power down cycle and be
weary of connecting projectors to outlets that may be part of an
automatic or remote power off cycle.

Also, many institutions try to save costs by just resetting the lamp
hours to zero. This heightens the chance of a lamp exploding and taking
out most of the electronics. I've seen it happen several times in my
A/V rental days!
