Hi Charles,

I work with a Benedictine monk and a number of art historians with
sometimes impressive Latin. For the monks, mass and psalm singing is in
Latin. They don't speak Latin at dinner, or passing one another in the
halls, but sometimes I hear Latin comments or "jokes" between those in
the know. In Austria, people regularly say "servus" in greeting and
"pfirte" in parting, both Latin. Though there are probably people who
know the language well enough to speak it with one another, I doubt a
child would be raised with Latin as their 1st language. I hear Romanian
has retained many aspects of the original Latin grammar. So, maybe
saying Latin is a dead language is a bit like saying dinosaurs are
extinct... while enjoying the bird song.

best,
Wendy

I've been reading this with mild interest. I thought Latin was a "dead"
language. That is no longer truly spoken, and pronounciation is only a
guess. Am I mistaken? Carpe diem! The last latin speaker was Colonel
Humphrey Flack but that was in another century.
