my favorite grape-in-the-microwave trick (and what does it say about us as a group that there's more than one to choose from???)

-put a thin layer of oil on the bottom of your microwave--remove the rotating dish first!
-put a grape in there, and turn on the microwave
-as the grape heats up, the steam and water vapor will shoot out the stem hole, and your grape will spin and slide all over the floor of the microwave. have grape races with your friends and colleagues!

The grape trick can be spectacular - and I've seen it ruin a microwave
oven, though can't remember the exact sequence of events beyond the
initial sparks and flashes.

There is one danger....ruining your microwave. Never seen it happen but
apparently they warn that they can overheat when used without anything
(or
with very little) inside them to absorb the microwaves...

Meanwhile I still like the grape experiment (putting a grape cut through
one
side but ot the skin on the other side in the microwave). That can give
you
plasma as well.

It takes about one second, and will freak out everyone in the lunchroom.

Of course, the metal isn't "gone." But where is it?
And do I really want to heat up my tea after setting spark to a CD in
the
same little oven?

Anyway, great way to put those AOL discs to good use.
