Catherine, Does Canada have something similar to the US AmeriCorps program?
AmeriCorps is similar to the Peace Corps but serve happens here in the US.

We applied for an received a AmeriCorps Grant (fall 2008) through the state
of Missouri the increased our program outreach from 12 small outreach
workshops serving about 175 student to 97 programs (mixed in were workshops,
Science Shows and Theatrical Performances) serving 8,724, serving 36 school
districts. Number would have been higher but we didn't keep track of the
children served through cart demos. All this programming was presented by
AmeriCorps Members, members were managed and trained by staff and we were
lucky enough to be involved in several partnerships including NiseNet and
Science without Boarders for staff and Member development. Members were also
active in the community by setting up parades, Memorial celebrations, went
to fairs and festivals around the region. The grant paid about 25% for
staff time, travel to and from events and living stipends for Members. Area
schools paid a very small fee for programs held in schools we offered them
free with paid admission. We are small rural town of 4,722 could never have
done it without our 16 members.

Unfortunately we got sequestered this year but hope to be refunded in the
fall of 2014. Obama hoping to get funding for a new AmeriCorps initiative
to send scientists and science programming into schools so we will be
applying Nationally next year.

Hi all,

A number of years ago our Centre did traditional outreach, taking our 'show
on the road' across our region. After a number of years in operation, cost
was the main reason that factored into us stopping this program. We are now
at the stage of considering if/what outreach opportunities there could be
with schools and are interested in hearing about the unique, impactful and
cost-effective (if that's possible) ways others have found to do this.
Realizing that one size does not fit all, others' success stories could be
the inspiration for exploring a new model at our end.

With thanks in advance for your feedback, Catherine
