ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

"We can assist classroom teachers by providing augmentation,
particularly alternative ways of looking at problems, proposing
solutions, and thinking
differently. Please be careful, and think apples and oranges..."

I think we need to do more than provide augmentation. We need to
contribute to fundamental change so that students are learning through
the methods that we all know are conducive to retention of knowledge and
understanding of concepts. The approaches we provide teachers need not
to be seen as "alternative", but rather as the right way to do things.
In order for that to happen, we need to be true partners with school
systems - learn from them as well as teach them. Teachers have far too
many "add-ons" available to them that dilute the continuity of the
education that children receive in grades K-12. I don't want to see
science centers in a position to be an add-on, but rather an integral
part of a comprehensive learning experience.
