Sometimes, this situation reaches us.....if I am making a call to
someone I have spoken to before, to follow up, and they tell me they
have switched to formula, I say 'I see...and how are you feeling
about that?' It happened to me today, in fact!

I don't say 'I'm sorry....' because it can produce the same defensive
reaction Susan describes....and risks closing off the dialogue.

I may well say 'I'm sorry' later in the conversation, if it feels
right to do so. Sometimes, I think parents are wanting me to say
something like 'well, formula is just as good/you did the right
thing/blah blah' and of course I don't. But I still might try to help
them see that the bf experience they did have was worthwhile and to
value it...and it's also useful for them to know they can still do
skin-to-skin or baby to breast, in fact, even if they no longer want
to breastfeed.
