I believe that guilt does not exist by itself.  Yes, guilt can be
grief.  I've also heard it defined as anger turned inward.  It can
be anger at those who failed to fully inform or who failed to back
up initial encouragement with practical help.  It can be anger at
one's own self for making choices that one wishes could be reversed.
