Many reference text explain that mothers with Hepatitis C can breastfeed. Ruth Lawrence's text, also the American Academy of Pediatrics Guide to Infectious Diseases ( nicknamed the Red Book by American pediatricians) and Bobbie Philips book on Breastfeeding and Medical Conditions (cant remember the exact name now.)

Don't feel bad though. We recently had the same problem in one of my hospitals a local well respected suburban hospital where the delivery room would not allow a hepatitis C positive mom to breastfeed. Luckily it only took a few hours to set them straight and get mom breastfeeding.
