I just wanted to draw the attention of Lactnetters to the article just out by
Kennell & Klaus published in the January, 1998 (Vol 19, No 1) issue of
PEDIATRICS IN REVIEW entitled "Bonding:  Recent Observations That Alter
Perinatal Care".

In the article they review the literature on human bonding and early neonatal
care.  Their recommendations are truly great:  Continuous support for the mom
during labor, avoidance of anagesia, keeping the baby with the mom immediately
after birth & not removing the baby for procedures/baths, etc., closing the
central nursery and doing 24 hour rooming in, encouraging early & frequent
breastfeeding, support after perinatal death or stillbirth and mourning for
the loss of the perfect infant in case of malformations.

This should be required reading for all pediatricians, obstetricians, and any
staff working in obstetrics or NICU units.
