Dear Friends:

At our city Breastfeeding Coalition meeting today, I learned that the formula
companies are putting out fabulous luncheon spreads, as well as cooking
waffles for staff. In return, hospital staff is becoming more and more convinced
that formula is okay. A full tummy and a pocket full of freebies wins allies.

The breastfeeding activists can not compete with this attack, being unable to
afford fancy foods as ways to give to staff. In fact, when staff attends
breastfeeding events, they may have to do it on their own time (and not be paid),
or leave some folks behind to tend to patients. The folks left behind have to
work harder to fill the gap. Neither of these techniques make breastfeeding
teaching received openly and well.

Does this go to ethics committees in hospitals? What is the best way to blunt
this attack?

warmly,

Nikki Lee RN, MS, Mother of 2, IBCLC, CCE, CIMI
