I have used this protocol over and over and over. Very successful when moms 1) have equipment 2) have persistence 3) willing to follow the regimen and have no problems with the herbs or meds. Biggest think I've found helpful is the idea that you don't start pumping until ready for the milk to come in - this means the birth control hormones have to be taken to raise the progesterone levels (which pumping doesn't do anyhow). But when the mom DOES start pumping, she needs to pretend it is a brand new baby - unlimited access to the breast and minimum of 10 stimulation sessions each time. This needs to continue until mom is producing some milk then gradually increase time and decrease to 8 stimulations per day. What is the effect? To keep prolactin high, remove any available milk and make more. I have lots of moms with a great supply, especially if they have some breast tissue to start with. I like the protocol and I have found moms who have 4-5 months to do the long protocol, have better luck in having a full supply. Just had one of my proud mommas come by yesterday with her roly-poly 6 month old, 100% breastfed. She is adding frozen milk to his first tastes of solid foods now. She has a freezer full! Love it!

Subject: Newman-Goldfarb Protocol for Induced Lactation

Wondering if any Lactation Consultants on this Listserv , other than those working with Dr. Newman, have every used this protocol with their adoptive moms? If yes, what was the outcome.
Anyone use another protocol?
Thank you in advance,
