Greetings, Friends,

I neeed to rant at someone and you all are elected!

I just spoke to a client of mine who has a nearly 2 year old daughter
who is still breastfeeding. The child has hydrocephalus and has had
numerous surgeries in her 2 years. She is having further surgery on
Friday.

In a preadmission visit with the anesthesiologist, mom discussed the
bfing. The MD told her that the child should have nothing by mouth
after midnight. When mom pointed out that she understood that breast
milk was considered a clear liquid and the child could thus get breast
milk closer to surtery than 8-10 hours the MD said that there was
divergent opinion on this and so she would not agree. The breast milk
would, however, be considered a clear liquid post op!!!!

The doc also pointed out that if the baby were under a year the after
midnight restriction would be eased. This is a kid in the 5th
percentile who still only weighs 20 lb. and sleeps 5 hours at night but
is then up every 2-3 hours and nurses as well several times a day.

This is, to corrupt Jack's phrase, sacrificing breastfeeding on the
altar of sheer stupidity.

I feel soooo much better having blown off steam to you all!

Thanks

Sue
