You can also sell just "first North American serial rights". That gives
the magazine or newspaper rights to publish the article ONCE, for the
first time in North America. Then you are free to do what you wish with
it, and they cannot reuse it without your permission. I know magazines
work this way, I don't know if newspapers do.
Publishers do allow special deals. My publisher has rights to the text,
but allowed me and the other contributors to keep the rights to our
photos. All I had to do was ask when the contract came and I didn't like
the provision on artwork. The contract was immediately amended, and then
I signed it.
