Hi Lactnetters,
I'm working with a mom who is due to deliver her 3rd baby in about a week.
She is being treated for anxiety disorder/depression with Paxil 10 mg./day with
good results. Her OB has approved her taking the medication during pregnancy,
but does not know about breastfeeding. She breastfed her first two children and
does not want to formula feed, but does not want to put her baby at risk either.
I have shared with her all the information I have including Dr. Hale's book (not
very encouraging) and talking to a local ped who suggested monitoring the baby
as the PDR does not contraindicate the drug during pregnancy or breastfeeding
but to use with caution. Does anyone out there have experience with this
particular medication while nursing? I know I cannot tell her it's safe as
there are too many unknowns, but hate for her to have to deprive her baby of the
benefits of breastfeeding unnecessarily.
     TIA
