The state of WA has operated the Residential Parenting Program for almost 2 decades.

This program involves allowing prisoners who satisfy certain criteria to keep their baby with them when they return to prison following birth. When feasible women in our state who are pregnant and in prison custody are housed in the WA state Correction's Center. The women give birth in the hospital I work in as an IBCLC. When I serve a mother who is in prison custody I can locate information about her eligibility for the RPP in her medical chart, or inquire about this of her when I serve her. The RPP has 2 Lactina breastpumps and kits available for their use, and I can discuss with her the potential use of the pump.

In some cases the mother is being separated from her baby. Depending on the circumstances there are times when the mother can arrange to have her expressed milk provided to the caretaker of her baby. Or in some cases the mother may anticipate being reunited with her baby in the future and we discuss the potential to sustain her milk supply for future breastfeeding.

And of course we perform evaluations and assessments of these breastfeeding couplets. Like any other pair, with some unique needs we attempt to address.
