My experience is with one mother from So. Korea. Babe was readmitted in Peds on Day 3 or 4 of Life for hyperbilirubinemia. This was about 5 years ago. I think the bili level was mid- to high-teens. She was accompanied by her own mother as they stayed with the infant. She was willing to pump her milk but was adamant that she throw out any yellow milk. Both mother and grandmother insisted that yellow milk causes (jaundice) yellow skin. They knew this to be an absolute fact.

But at least she wanted to breastfeed once the yellow milk was gone.

Hi All

I have been wondering if anyone works closely with a breastfeeding Chinese
community? I work as a hospital LC and I am constantly trying to work
with the women, who's culture and beliefs are so strong that they ask for
formula because they believe they don't have enough milk for their babies?
If mothers request formula it is given along with a leaflet that explains
the risks, but the women still give the formula. W ith 15% of our birth rate
being used by this culture I am desperately trying to find ways to be the
baby's advocate. We do breastfeeding workshops, Have brochures written in
Mandarin, Korean, Chinese. Have free interpreter service, Does anyone have
any more ideas that they are willing to share with me.

Sincerely
