Hi Jaye,

I'm a new person to the BF world, I am a mother of two, I have a 4 year old (nursed until she was 1years old) and a 15 mon. still nursing.  I am also a nurse and a new LLL Leader here in New York. I love reading all postings here on Lactnet I now feel intouch with breastfeeding world.

I was reading your posting fibrocystic breast.  Your posting made me reflect on my own nursing relationship with both of my kids and my own fibrocystic breasts.  After giving birth to my 1st child in 2003, I asked my LC the same question, she too was not sure but told me to ‘nurse my daughter and your breast lumps should not interfere.’

I hope my email will help you; hearing from another person with the similar diagnosis.
With both my kids I had a very full milk supply, I also had bi-lat. pain in both breasts.  I was always wondering why my breasts was so painful and I had no s/s of clogged duct or mastitis.

I recall pumping and hand expressing while in the shower alot.  I also was nursing almost every hour, hour and half, this did help me with the fullness and the pain. I felt like I spent the whole day nursing or expressing my milk??? But it did help in the long run!
I was a coffee drinker before I had kids and loved anything sweet.  Eliminating caffeine and sugar from my diet also seem to help me with the discomfort.

It did take some time, not sure how long, I think amount a week or two for everything to settle. Nursing and expressing alot was the key, along with warm compress and all the same things you would do with a clogged duct.

After I weaned my first child (BF for 1 year) I went for an ultra sound to see if had they grown.  I was happy to find out they did not.  I think I recall her saying ‘some look smaller???’ Although I have to call my Dr. to conform this. My fibrocystic breasts do feel more conformable now then before I had my children.  I sometimes forget they are even there. Reflecting on my breastfeeding experience and fibrocystic breast I think your statement to the mom was right. I hope this email helps you get a little insight on a lactation and fibrocystic breast.  If anyone hears of anything please let me know! This area does need a little more reseach.

paula :)

Subject: Fibrocystic breasts

Hi All,

Hoping I am not over my limit.I have a mom with fibrocystic breasts. She is
0 days pp and has a full milk supply. Baby is not able to nurse just yet
ue to other issues we have under control. Mom is very uncomfortable
owever, experiencing pain within the breasts. I have searched my texts and
ound not a lot on this situation. Mom herself tried doing her own research
nd found little information dealing with fibrocystic breast tissue and
actation.

I told her my thought - since I don't know much about this situation - is
hat the glandular tissue may be getting crowded by the benign lumps and
hat it may take time for everything to find its 'place' in the breast and
ettle down. Don't know if that would be a correct statement, but it was my
est guess. She says none of the lumps have changed size; they are well
apped out by her. She does not have signs or symptoms of mastitis or
lugged milk ducts. The discomfort is bi-lateral. She has some relief when
he pumps. She is currently pumping every 2 - 2.5 hours for her own
omfort. Going longer is not possible duie to the discomfort.

Any help, research etc is greatly appreciated.

armly,
