Hi Erin
The Australian breastfeeding Association has a booklet called 'Breastfeeding
your baby with Down's Syndrome'.
http://www.mothersdirect.com.au/prod147.htm (Only AU$5 which I think is
about 12 cents US!!!!)
I am sure that La Leche League will have something similar too. I have
known more than one mother whose baby has Down's who breastfed for more than
twelve months. I think that the most important thing a nurse can do in this
situation is to put the mother in touch with her local mother to mother
support organisation. She will be surrounded by medical and educational
intervention. This means that she will encounter a lot of people who don't
believe she can breastfeed her baby. She will also be unlikely to see other
mothers breastfeeding their babies - especially if they have disabilities
and/or syndromes. She needs to spend time in a subculture that KNOWS that
breastfeeding is possible for her and for this baby. She needs the support
of others who have been there and done that - and assuming LLLI is like ABA,
there will be a way to put mothers with similar experiences together.

Cheers
Nina
