Hi Pam
Please encourage this mum not to rely on skin prick and blood test on it's
own for the egg white (and others). As I mentioned - my son's blood test
showed NO ALLERGY to ANY tree or ground nuts but had skin reaction (skin
prick test) to almonds, cashew and peanuts and anaphylaxis to the one and
only medically supervised challenge of cashew. The specialist recommended we
take that as "all tree and ground nuts.
I really feel for this mum, common allergies are hard enough let alone a
rarer one which doesn't have warnings on food labels like wheat, eggs, dairy
and nuts. I suggest she search on allergy forums for a family who have a
family member with the same allergy or even ask the media to help her find
someone.

Sorry, but when I talked to mom again, I got more information regarding
the oat allergy and I thought it might be of interest to those who
responded to my previous post. It differs from my update yesterday, I
had spoken with dad and his account of things was much more brief than
mom's (he is in the military and had been away for several months) This
is from mom's email to me, she has given me permission to share:
Yes, Katy was having reactions to oats that got more severe and more
sensitive. It started out as just an immediate red facial rash after
consuming whole oat, like rolled around bread. However, she now reacts
to oat flour like Cheerios, etc. She has had 4 severe reactions that
caused white hives to swell within the red rash that now can go from
chin to eyes instead of just around her mouth. She has had both the
prick test and the blood test. We go back to ***** our allergist
tomorrow for the blood results. We have had success with the oat free
diet. She can eat rice, wheat, etc., and has been tested for those as
well as nuts, soy, diary, all negative. She had a slight reaction to egg
whites and pistachios, but the allergist didn't feel the blood test
would reveal a true allergy to those. However, she had fairly severe
reactions, rash and body welts to both birthday cakes, both were
supposedly oat free but not egg free so I think the blood test will
reveal a larger egg allergy than previously thought. The allergist is
very concerned that she will have a very severe reaction esp. since we
have had welts FAR before her 1 st year. I have contacted FAAN, but they
have said Oat allergies are so rare, they don't have anything that can
help me, besides basic allergy info. I will keep you posted as we get
deeper into this!! Thanks again, Karrah
