Thanks to Catherine Watson Genna as well as Jean Kotterman and Jeanette Panchula
for responses to my concerns.
Catherine has reinforced my gut feeling that this baby, though showing nothing
obvious, probably has a restricted tongue that needs 'attention'. Your suggestions
have been passed on to this mother. She is seeing a Physical Therapist and has
the number of a great ENT - so we will soon see about those assessments.
To Jeanette Panchula - thanks for noting added tips such as nipple shield use and
tube feeding to get baby encouraged to continue to suck. Both great ideas - but
already tried and failed. My error in not telling you all what had been tried in the past.
And thanks to Jean Cotterman for reminding me about hyper and hypo for this
condition. Should keep that straight. Hyper means too much insulin and this baby
seems to not be producing any insulin (hypo).
Always feel supported by your sharings - and we all continue to need peer support
to reinforce our thoughts and ideas...and to offer new ones we would have missed.
Warmly,
Sharon Mattes, IBCLC, RLC, AAHCC
