Thanks so much for your reply!  

I spoke with the mother again (via the mailing list) and she didn't
reply about her ethnicity or Thalassemia.  She did mention that she
was anemic prior to pregnancy, and had been feeling well until
recently.  Now she is starting to feel a bit run down and was
wondering if the aneima had "come back."

She did agree to start eating more meat (mentioning that she is
considered fairly healthy but does not eat as much red meat as she
probably should).  She has also started taking a supplement to
increase her iron.

I really appreciate all of the responses that I received from
everyone.  Again, you are all a very valuable resource, and I'm very
proud to be a member of this list.
