Mary Ann, what is the baby's disposition throughout the day, particularly
in the evening? Any colic symptoms?

I have had several mothers whose babies would feed only in the side-lying
position and were also fussy in the evenings. Mother did a 3-day-trial of
no dairy and babies began to feed in any positions and their restless sleep
and fussies disappeared.

Help Mom plan ahead if she chooses to do this. She needs to read labels on
all foods she buys--bread, salad dressing, packaged mixes, cookies, etc.
She also needs to get some quick-to-grab foods into the fridge. Most of my
clients who have this problem are willing to test it for 3 days. Some
people recommend a week but that sounds so long and usually there is
improvement in 3 days if she is very diligent in staying away from even a
speck of dairy.

Now, if it is food related there could be other foods but I always begin
with dairy. I assure them that mayonnaise is not dairy, nor are eggs. We
are considering cow's milk protein. I also suggest that they not eat beef
for those days because some babies are also bothered by the bovine protein
in beef.

When there is improvement mothers are not hesitant to eliminate these foods
so that they can go out and not always be having to find a bed.
