Mary Ann,

A long time ago, as a LLL leader, I worked with a mom whose baby would only
nurse while mom was lying down because at about 3 mos she'd gone on a nursing
strike due to oversupply issues; side lying helped reduce flow, baby became
comfortable with this position and not getting "fire-hosed", and this little
stinker (actually, she was quite smart) only nursed lying down for many
months regardless what mom tried. (well after oversupply was corrected, as
well) Mom persevered, gradually tried more and more upright position,
adjusted to lying down almost anywhere (when at mtgs would lie on the floor
to nurse) and I think baby was close to a yr before she found sitting to
nurse acceptable (the baby).

This was an extreme case and we tried every trick in the book but I remember
telling mom her child was just so smart that she remembered the trauma of
choking, etc and when she initially went back to breast following her strike
it was lying down and she wasn't about to give up a good thing once she had
it.
