I have seen a mother with very sore nipples whose baby is gaining just fine
on breast alone. I have seen her on one occasion, I believe, and did my
usual attempt at fixing the latch, use of all purpose nipple ointment and
all the rest. The mother is still having very sore nipples. She nursed a
previous baby for 22 months, I believe, and would like to continue, though
she is beginning to wonder. I don't remember how old the baby is, but I
would say definitely in the second month, possibly older.

The baby has congenital torticollis and the parents are wondering if this
could possibly affect the way the baby is latching on and suckling. I have
not seen any babies with congenital torticollis with breastfeeding problems,
or if I have, I don't remember if and how it could have affected the
breastfeeding.

If anyone has any ideas, either about how to help with the nipple soreness,
or about the congenital torticollis perhaps affecting breastfeeding, please
respond to the parents [log in to unmask] as well as to the list.

Thanks,

Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC
