My ornithologist wife commented on this as the annual (spring) raptor migration. I think we'd be alarmed if we didn't see it? On the insect decline topic, the following paper has received a lot of airplay: Hallmann CA, Sorg M, Jongejans E, Siepel H, Hofland N, Schwan H, et al. (2017) More than 75 percent decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass in protected areas. PLoS ONE 12(10): e0185809. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0185809 The work was done in reserves in Germany that are effectually small protected islands amid a lot of agriculture. The authors looked at habitat change and climate change and felt unable to satisfactorily explain the decline with these factors. They did not specifically investigate pesticide impacts and were restrained in their comment on that possible driver.
